How do you convince somebody to switch ammo brands?

I grew up in Nebraska and have been hunting all my life. I have used all kinds of ammo to take all kinds of animals and now I am sold on Barnes bullets. I personally just can't see using any other type of bullet. They have been far more accurate than anything I have used in the past. Now that I live in Florida and my uncle does too, we don't get to shoot as much as we would like. We always spend a day or two on the range when we get home to get used to the condition differences from hot and humid Florida to COLD and dry Nebraska. Usually the rifles are pretty close, but sometimes we have a bit of a time getting them sighted in. For the past few years, I have been trying to get him to give barnes a chance and I just can't sell it. Maybe when he see's how good my 300 RUM shoots this year he will give it a try. I guess what i'm trying to do is make sure that my hunting partners have just as accurate of guns as I do by purchasing quality ammo to shoot in them. I have a friend who is going with me for the first time this year who just bought a new 30-06 and I am going to try and get him a trophy Muley. I tried to get him to wait until we go by Bass Pro or Cabelas to get some good ammo, but I think he went to Wal Mart and bought whatever they had last night. I sure hope it works out for him. Thanks

Let's answer it this way: what would it take to convince YOU to shoot some other ammo?

If you answer that you are completely happy with what you are shooting, and you don't or won't change, then please realize that the other guy has the very same answer.

In short, you might say "I use this because..." But you will get nowhere if you preach "You should use this because..."

Also consider this.

My 270 HATES premium ammo with a purple passion. I mean HATES HATES HATES. The last time I spent big bucks on a box of premium stuff I could hear the paper target laughing at me. A $14 green and yellow remington box from wally world printed a 1 3/4" group at 100 yards last saturday and it was the first time I had been behind the trigger on that gun in more than two years. I was jerking the trigger half the time, but when I settled in poof there it was.

If it were me, and you were trying to convince me to use Barnes X or double platinum gold engrave whatevers I would smile, nod, and go spend $14 at wally world because I know where they shoot, and how they shoot.

You want him to switch? Prove to him that the rounds you want him to use will outshoot what he DOES use in HIS gun.

My 2 cents.

I understand completely. Like I said, the ammo being shot right now is not shooting great and is inconsistent. Now I understand you don't need 1/2 MOA groups to shoot deer or most of anything that size. I think you are right, maybe I will just have to convince them when they see how well mine is shooting. Like I said, I think my uncles gun would shoot better, if he tried something else. Hopefully I have a good report from our hunting trip this month and will fill all our tags and have plenty pics. Thanks

Frank I still think you need to get him to try a box just at the range. Inconsistant shooting could be alot more than just ammo. It would be nice to know that BEFORE he is pulling a trigger on a muley. If he is shooting inconsistant I don't understand why he wouldn't be willing to try something else myself.

As long as what they are using will kill a deer don't get all excited about it. Most deer sized animals do not need premium ammo. Just a plain old softpoints will do the trick. You would be hard pressed to get me to change to Barnes however I shoot Nosler's in most of my handloads. What it boils down to is the each their own.

I have a friend that thinks he knows it all(not saying you do). If I buy a Toyota he tells that the only truck to buy is a Chevy which is what he has. He is not wrong but very opionated. Is he wrong, heck no but we all have our preferences.

Enjoy the trip and hope they shoot straight.

Good Ol Boy:I agree completely. I am just trying to get him to try it when we go to the range just like you said. If not, stick to what he has been using.

Buckhunter: Agreed as well. I have just found something that has improved my accuracy tramendously. I was shooting Hornady SST's through it before and the accuracy was poor. Now I am shooting almost 1/2 MOA. Just trying to help my buddy and my uncle out. That's it.

Go ahead and buy him a box and let him figure out which is best.

I'd say you don't have a whole lot of reasons to mess with what he likes shooting.
I know I am not going to change the brands or types I use just because someone else thinks I should.

like the farmer said who kissed the cow each to his own taste , i personally use Remington Ammo some of the loads are with premium bullets some are just the standard pointed soft points or soft points why , because they are readily available at just about any sporting goods store, pricing is fair and they perform well in all extremes, my model 700 lss in 300 ultramag shoots rem ammo and shoots .585 groups all day and thats with either the premium load using noslers or swift scirrocos or the point soft point core lokt in the express , like the old add used to say the deadliest mushroom in the woods
