Son's first deer

Like a lot of members on this board I've been hunting a few years, over 30 now. A lot of you know how much fun it is to take your kids with you too. My boy has hunted deer & ducks with me for the past few years but he just turned 14 and can hunt on his own now. We scouted out our hunting property and he picked his own spot and on opening morning we each went to our stands and got our deer. Nothing big, but it was the best deer hunt I ever had. He was proud because he did it all himself, he just needed me to drive him from the hunting shack to the field road about a mile from his stand and he walked in from there. Dear old dad did help him field dress it, but everyone should get one assist on their first deer. I told him it would be the last time he'd get any help from me.

He is 14 but he's nostalgic. We hunt in a slug zone and he chose to use an old Ithica model 37 in 16 guage, it's about 60 years old. He carries a knife he got from an old friend of our family that his dad gave to him in 1951.

We just got the meat back from the locker and will eat good this winter, my kids think beef & pork taste funny since they were raised on elk & venison.

I take him and his young friends shooting, hunting & fishing whenever I can because it's fun and because they might remember and take me with when I'm old.

Thumbs up Well Done M.T.

That is a fine looking smile along with an impressive first deer! Your son (and you) will never forget this special moment! I hope that at some point in my life, I am blessed with children that too share my passion for the outdoors. Great pics!

Just too cool, man! Awesome to see youngsters succeed! I gave an assist on gutting my little sis's first deer too - I had an assist from grandpa on my first. Just a great feeling to see the reaction of a first kill. And a darn nice buck too... Congrats!
