Who else carries a 'hawk in ML season?

Next Friday our PA flintlock deer season opens. I received a "throwing" tomahawk for my birthday and like it very much. I made a belt sheath for it and will carry it afield. Yes, I know, real Longhunters just shove a 'hawk into their belt, but this one has a keen edge that mandates a sheath.

The November issue of "Muzzle Blasts" magazine has a good article on tomahawks. As most folks may know, many 'hawks were also pipes with a bowl opposite the sharp edge of the blade; hence, the name "pipe axes." Well, mine is not a pipe axe.

I have crossed over pretty much with flinter rifle, patched roundballs, powder horn, beaded possibles bag and 'hawk for my treks afield. Who else carries a 'hawk?

Mr. 16 gauge,

Is your 'hawk also a throwing type? I ran the Cherokee Run 'hawk event for a few years and got pretty good tossing one of them things. Mine is now used pretty much for chopping squaw wood for the campfire in the woods.

We will have snow for opening day and I will build a fire about mid-day.

It's supposed to be a throwing one, but I'll be darned if I can get it to stick into anything.....besides, why would you want to throw away a perfectly good weapon?

Mr. 16 gauge,

My 'hawk sticks into the log stump out back when I toss it from about 15 feet. I would toss it into a bad guy rather than clash and whomp in hand-to-hand up close and personal.

Be well.

Adam...you need to go back and watch "Last of the Mohicans" and take notes!

Mr. 16 gauge,

I watched my favorite movie, "Last of the Mohicans", again last night for the 12th time. Early on in the moivie Uncas tosses his war club thingy to take out a fleeing Huron warrior in the ambush of the company of the 60th Regiment. What did I miss? I would toss my 'hawk in the same manner.

Be well and Merry Christmas.

Actually, it was Chingachkook....and it was the last guy kilt and he was running away! I like Hawkeyes technique better......catch the other guy's 'hawk with your own, flip him on his back, then whack him in the chest!
He did a few other neat things with his 'hawk (and knife) in the battle on the road from Ft William Henry.......

Next thing yah know, you'll be tryin' to tell me that you split trees into kindling like Daniel Boone did in the opening credits of the T.V. show!

Have a Merry Christmas...............
