Wind: Gusty at our 6 Lunch: 2-meat BarBQue plate, Beef and link, fried okra, and tater tots. Side of grilled onions. Dr. Pepper to drink. Dad lapped the rings and helped mount the scope Christmas Day. I took the rifle out last Saturday to shoot with Dad at the range. I shoot all groups left handed (since my left eyeball is the good one nowdays), and this is only the second time I have ever shot a rifle left handed. The first dozen rounds at 100 finally got me to realizing I was shooting approximately 22" high and 18" right of the target. Took it down to the 25 (Yeah I know I should have started there) and got it zeroed in 1" high and just about dead on. Returning to the 100 yard range I began to fire three shot groups at 100 yards. Below are the initial groupings. Remington UMC 55gr FMJ (Green and White box): Initial 100 yard group was 1 1/2" low and 1" left. Three shots in a 1" horizontal group. Second 100 yard group was 1"low and 1" left Three shots in a 1" vertical group. Last of ammo I used this for sight in at 25 yards as well. Scope adjusted for Center. Monarch 55gr FMJ (Academy sporting goods): Initial 100 yard group was 1" low and 1" right. Three shots in a very ragged hole (not quite a cloverleaf) Second 100 yard group 3/4" low and 1"right. 3/4" three shot group. Last of ammo. I had been attempting to use this to initially sight in at 100 yards. Scope Adjusted for Elevation. Federal Cartridge Headstamp Mil Surplus 60gr FMJ: Initial 100 yard group 1" high and 1/2" left. 1 1/2" three shot group. Second 100 yard group 1" high and 1/4" right. 1 3/4" five shot group. Third 100 yard group 1/2" high and dead on. 1" four shot group with a fifth pulled shot 1 1/4" right. Fourth 100 yard group 3/4" high and dead on. 1" five shot group. Fifth 100 yard group 3/4" high 3/4" right. Unkown group size. I fired three rounds and five holes appeared in target. Somebody on the range was a wee bit off of their own target. Sixth 100 yard group 1/4" high - 1 at 10, 1 at 12, and 1 at 3. 1" group. Three shots. Last of ammo send by mistake from campany in box with Accuswage ammo. Accuswage ammunition. LC Brass - Sierra Varminter 60gr HP: Initial 100 yard group. 3/4" high 1/4" right. 1 1/2" three shot group. Second 100 yard group 1" high and dead on. 1" three shot group Third 100 yard group - who knows. I fired three times and got five holes on paper again. I know I pulled one, but beyond that. . . . . Fourth 100 yard group 1/2" high and dead on. 3/4" three shot group. While studying this group in the spotting scope two more holes appear in my target. Fifth 100 yard group 1/2" high and dead on (except the flier) 1" four shot group with a pulled round 1 1/2 on the 3o'clock. Federal Power Shock 50 grain HP: Initial 100 yard group. 3/4" high and dead on. 3/4" group with two touching. Second 100 yard group 1/2" high and 1/4" right. 1/2" group with two touching. While studying this group through the spotting scope four more holes appeared in my target. I stopped shooting at this point. and we went to lunch. My reaction? Sheer delight. Thats 5 brands/types of ammo, some of it ultra cheapo stuff and I was getting the best groups I had gotten in a LONG LONG time from a rifle. A rifle whose barrel was not yet broken in at that. With factory ammo! I found that the semi heavy barrel would not get noticably warm until round 9 through it, and then would cool down in under three minutes to an almost cold touch. The muzzle break did not make the rifle noticeably louder, but you could watch the rounds hit paper, and of course there was almost no recoil whatsoever. A bit of warning however the muzzlebreak was a bit louder if you were standing behind the shooter. Despite several reviews I had read on line I did NOT find the stock to be flimsy, NOR did it wiggle with "light preassure". The stock was solid, and easy to grip. The 700VTR is pure pleasure to shoot. The trigger is crisp, but could stand to be lightened a wee little bit. GoodOlBoy

GOB,
Very nice rifle and photo. Your new rig looks like a "Tora Bora Rifle" used in Afganistan. Well done and an excellent report right down to the tater tots! Adam
