Ready Yet?

I know it's not even February but is anyone else getting the itch? Maybe it's because it was once again below zero this morning and we still have over a foot of snow, but I'm anxious to get into the woods and hear some turkeys. We've applied for the Illinois draw and with some luck we'll be able to join Kevin Hammell again for a weekend of chasing birds and just an all around great time.

I'll be taking the bow again so Petey should have another video clip or two. I think we'll take our coyote hunt a little more serious this year as well. We didn't accomplish much last year but make noise.

Just checked my draw results. Our party drew 3rd season, so looks like we're heading South come April 17th!

No real itch here with the weather!!!

Today, the 31st, is the last day to buy an over the counter tag or apply for one of the drawn tags here in Michigan. I bought my OTC tag the other day.

My son better get his two kids tags purchased tomorrow or he will be in hot water with me and the kids. Granddaughters first year and the grandson will be trying to make it 4 years straight. He doesn't realize it but his sister will have first priority this year.

I am afraid that our turkeys are taking a beating with all this snow and cold. Awful hard for them to travel in 2 foot of snow. We have not been above freezing for a month.

I know the feeling. If the deep snow wasn't hard enough on them, we got some ice about a wk ago to form a solid crust, then put 5 more inches of snow on it. Spring can't get here soon enough for the poor buggers.

That's one nice thing about our Illinois trip. It's usually really, really nice comparable to here. Last year we almost got blown away by a massive storm that dropped a tornado but it was still 10-15 degrees warmer.

Have seen a flock of about 20 birds the past 3 mornings on my way to work. There's still snow on the ground and their still grouped up but each morning there has been 3 or 4 longbeards strutting on the edge of the group. Makes me anxious for spring!

They are thick in Western South Dakota and I think they will again have a two tag permit for anybody that wants one.
