Anybody Else Getting Psyched Up For The 09 Season?
Hey folks,
It's been awhile since anyone posted here in the fishing forums so I thought that I'd get this area a little kick-started as I stare out my window here at work on my lunch hour, at the frigid pond across the street in my industrial park.  I have built up a nice arsenal of fish hunting tools over time by acquiring a quality pice of equipment each year, as I am able. This year I picked up a new Abu Garcia Revo Toro reel with the 5:4:1 high capacity 250 yard spool for my muskie fishing. I normally don't buy anything it's first year out of the gate but I needed another heavy duty reel, like the Revo line on some of my other outfits, and could simply not find another reel that suited my needs (have had my share of problems with Shimano) After the holidays, I stumbled unto a fortuitous fluke in the form of a Cabelas 7'6 muskie rod that I picked up for 1/2 off stopping into one of their Bargain Cave departments at a store in my area. When I picked the rod up and saw the pricetag, I immediately began searching for a repaired tip, cracked handle, etc, but it was perfect. I asked a sales associate and after rubbi ng his forehead-rather bewildered himself, said that the price was in fact correct. On my way to the cash register, I swung by the fishing department to confirm my suspicions and sure as heck, the same exact fishing rof was slightly more than double the cost. The rod carries a 15 year no questions asked warranty so I didn't hesitate. It will be nice to get out on the water again. I need to haul my tackleboxes out of the boat and clean, organize, and change split-rings and sharpen hooks at some point in between remodeling my basement oh and keeping Wifey-poo sated with her own honey-do lists.  Warm weather cannot come soon enough!

Unfortunately, I'll be in Korea this year so I'll have to see and there's any fishing there. I'll be back for a month in the summer and I'm looking forward to doing some more fly-fishing up in the Sun Valley area. Fish there last August for the first time and had a great time. My girlfriend's Dad is an avid fly-fisherman and taught me a few tricks. Once I took his advice my success tripled
 Since I get back just before the season in 2010 I'll be doing plenty of fishing. Hope everyone has a good year.BTW Steverino, nice catch on the rod. I've found a couple gems in the bargain cave but nothing like that

Good luck to you in Korea Tater! Seeing as how you are basically surrounded by water
 I'd be surprised if there wasn't some type of fishing possibilities which abound. As is the case even here in the States, it's time to get away and wet a line, right?I have never fly-fished but at some point, I would like to learn how. It has always intrigued me. It's funny because I am always hearing from my friends about the great deals that they come across on various fishing tackle, rods, reels etc and I usually think to myself, "Now why don't I ever come across deals like that?" Well...this year I'll have my own story. Good luck everyone this year! Remember to change the line in your spools- I don't mess around anymore after losing some good fish years ago for being lazy! Cut and retie often!

I take good care of my fly line so I only change it out every couple years. It'll get replaced once I get back before I do any fishing. My leaders and tippets, however, get replaced before each season and well as getting replaced on the water after being broke by some pi$$ed off fish
 I hate replacing leaders cuz I can never get that nail knot just right. Usually takes a couple tries. Once I get over to Korea I'm gonna ask around and see if there are any good streams. If there are I'll send for my fly rod and tackle. Keep your fingers crossed; I don't think I'll make it through the year if I can't get out with my fly rod. I'm hooked (pun intended)

Thats way to much work. I have a little johnny walker 36inch pole that cost $2 14 years ago at an academy sporting goods with a $4 shakespeare real holding 8lb cajun red cast line with a brass snap swivel on it. I use a long shank #8 aberdeen cricket hook with a quarter inch hunk of worm, a piece of removeable split shot, and if I am a a creek instead of a dock on a lake I use a 9cent polyfoam bobber.
Last year this rig caugh 4 bass larger than 9lbs and so many perch and catfish I lost count. In fact the only problem I had was a couple of larger catfish that kept straightening my hooks. . . . This el cheapo rig works better than my several hundred hollar big bass rigs do. . . . GoodOlBoy

It's funny you say that GOB,
Over the past couple of seasons of taking my young niece or nephew fishing, I've kinda found myself having a simple slip bobber rig at the ready, even when I'm by myself. For active fish, I'll fish it a little more agressively by swimming the live bait rig more frequently between pauses or twitches and have to admit, I've also taken some dandy fish (no 9# LM, but some respectable fish all the same Sometimes (actually, most of the time) simpler is better.

Tater you have that one dead on!
Thats why I have gotten to where I like the simple rigs. I used to haul two rods (one light and one medium heavy) and two LARGE tackle boxes with me. Tried jigs, crankbaits, worms, topwater, spinners, you name it until something hit. Nowdays its simple. That little rod and a tackle box that fits in my back pocket. I use a $2 food grade 5 gallon pickle bucket to haul ice and sodas in, and as a seat. Unless I catch something worth a durn, or even sometimes then, I tend to just throw them all back. I love to fish, and relax. Of course I am partial to hushpuppies and fresh fried fish too. GoodOlBoy
