barrel length and revolvers?
For those of you who have carried for a while/carried many different types of firearms:
What do you feel is the maximum barrel length for CC with a revolver (assuming IWB carry)? I know that the 'bulge' from the cylinder is more of an issue than barrel length, per se, and I can carry my 1911 with a 5" barrel without much difficulty. Just browsing the used gun websites, and there seem to be more options on revolvers with longer barrels (4" and above) than the 2.5" I've been hankern' for. Thanks in advance..............

Bbl Length
About the longest I ever carried was a 4 5/8 inch SAA I usually carry my Wilson 45 auto. If carrying a revolver I'd go with a 4 inch
Personally I hate to carry cause it's a PITA...but necessary sometimes. Momma always has one in her purse or somewhere

I prefer five shot snubs simply because they disappear into the waistband, or pocket so easily. I have carried a 6" gp100 IWB before. With a long jacket the problem boiled down to comfort (it wasn't comfortable) not visibility. Not to mention it felt like everybody could see it even though they couldn't. As with Skeet I would say 4" or shorter.

I used to carry a S&W Model 19 with 4" barrel because there was a feeling I might need to use it in the open where longer shots might be needed. It was an accurate revolver and would definitely keep anyones head down within 100 yards. Today it is a S&W Model 60 with 3" barrel and adjustable sights. Very accurate and easily concealed. Five shots doesn't put you to much of a disadvantage. Remember, the first shot that hits generally wins the gunfight.

Mr. 16 gauge,
For many years I carried a 4-inch M10 S&W in a strong side holster and never was "made" carrying. I often put a M1911 inside my weak side waistband and again, never was "made." I would say a 4-inch revolver or M1911 can be carried CCW with no problems. Adam

I always like the 2 or 2 1/2 snubby for conceal carry. Always felt the long barrel was noticable which in reality isn't. My favorite and still is, is a mod 60 S&W.
Living where I do even with proper permits your in a world of crap carrying anything so smaller is better. |

Old S&W md. 36 Chiefs Special 2" bbl. Only thing barrel lenght does is increase your draw lift, but allows for more accuracy. Don't need more than 5 rounds as you should be trying to disengage yourself from the situation. Also are talking close range shooting. With the md. 36 the farthest I ever practice with it is 15 yds, and most at 7 yds and less. No matter what you carry practice with it faithfully.

I usually don't go over two inch barrel length for IWB carry. Anything longer is just unwieldy inside the britches.
I carry three, four, five and six inch barrel revolvers though, in OWB holsters.
