The squirrels.....the mock me!

Well, since the weather was warm & sunny yesterday, I decided to put duck hunting on hiatus and chase some squirrels again; Michigan has a rule that no rifles are allowed in the woods 5 days before the firearm deer opener, so I decided to take my .62 cal trade musket out and maybe get her blooded.
Twas not to be! The squirrels mocked me! Didn't see a single one.....didn't even seen much in the way of chipmunks, which are usually all over the place. The woods were pretty dead. I did see a forkhorn buck; he walked in behind me at 35 yards on one of my stands....if season was open & I had a RB instead of shot loaded in the gun, he might have been mine! I also had a wild turkey fly over me on another stand......wasn't sure what it was at first, but it sailed right over head and gave me a good look. Lastly, a ruffed grouse flushed from a grape vine tangle near the parking area as I was tying on my boots.....that is the first ruffed grouse I have seen on this parcel of state land in 15-16 years! Hope they are going to make a come back.
So, I didn't get to shoot anything, but it was a pretty awesome day none the less.......

.....and it beats having to go to work!

Mr. 16 gauge,

I went afield yesterday with my .50 caliber smoothbore flint Hawken and loyal hound. I load 75 grains of 2F Goex behind 80 grains (by volume) of #6 shot. We had a nice trek over the forest, but saw nothing here in PA.

Hello Adam;
Forgot to mention my load was 70 grains of FFg and 1 1/8 oz of #5 shot (looks more like #4 to me though). Hope to get out again some time on Sat. and try again.
