Who names their muzzleloaders?

A recently deceased "Mountain Man" outdoor writer wrote for a monthly publication. He named his .54 flintlock "Simon." I often thought female names predominated for MLs and found masculine and neuter names for old time Longhunters were also applied.

I believe Davy Crockett called his ML "Old Betsy." Buffalo Bill named a Sharps "Lucria Borge." Not to put too fine of a point on this, but has anyone given a name (s) to their muzzleloaders? If I go that route, I need to come up with 8 or 10 names and then keep them all straight.

Usually it called a "Rotten SOB". Then again it's just a name.

I guess I'd have to name mine "Dusty" because I haven't had it out of the closet for years.

Guy,

Very good responses. Here is my list:

.45 Hawken Flintlock "Lori"
.50 Hawken Flintlock "Nicola"
.50 Hawken Caplock "Miklos"
.54 Hawken Flintlock "Webley"
.54 Renegade Caplock "Mary Lou"

I kinda like names for my smokepoles.

I named my .54 cal Lyman Great Plains rifle "Sally". Named after a beagle raised by my father who named her after a woman of ill repute.

My .54 caliber Early Lancasterrifle is "Lorraine" named after my wife. Neither's ever let me down. My smoothbore is called "Erin", named after my daughter. My daughter was a shot-put champion in High School and at the Univ. of Florida. The name was a no brainer since they both throw a big ball.
