more .45 questions, todays topic magazines

I checked Brownells and Midway USA, and the choices are mind boggling. I am always looking for a cheaper price, that is why I am getting I am getting a .45 from RIA and not Colt.

What would be a decent magazine? I really would like to stay around the $20ish price range, unless I must go higher.

C'mon y'all......list 'em!

I divide magazines into 2 groups: range magazines, and carry magazines.
A range magazine is one that works pretty well- a stoppage at the range isn't the end of the world. A carry magazine is one that works flawlessly every time. Those are the magazines you carry when you carry the pistol for protection.
I have a bunch of different range magazines, including some rusty old GI surplus ones.
For carry, I use only Ed Brown or Wilson Combat. I believe those are closer to 30$. I suggest you get 1 or 2 of those if you'll carry the 1911 for protection.
Chip McCormick makes a decent magazine, too, and I think those are under 20$.
Whatever you buy, test it extensively in your gun before putting the magazine in the 'carry' group.

I use Wilson for carry. I also have a few(LOL) other types and always keep a few military mags around..You can buy them new for around 6-8 bucks. I even have a couple of the old 2 tone mags from around WWI. Still work just fine

I only use Wilson combat 8 rounders. You can't beat them. They cost in the $30s, but you get what you pay for. I would rather have 2 wilsons than three of any $30 mags out there.

jon,

IF you can get 100% reliability from $20 mags, good for you. I have a couple dozen .45 mags on establishment. Some feed JHP loads 100%, but not SWC cast bullets. Others prefer my 200 grain cast SWC bullet 100% of the time. I mark them on the base plate: "JHP" or "SWC" and never the twain are mixed!

100% reliabilty is more important that price, IMO.

I figure I only need one carry magazine of quality, that one will be of Kimber or Colt quality.

But I want some cheap spares for the range. I lose mags like a big dog. Like a doofus I tend to leave them on the bench when I leave the range.

In Germany I always forgot my 9mm mags, or my mags for my rimfires, the range master knew it was the dumb American, here they would be 'free mags' for someone.

Cheap range mags buy mil spec mags for $7. You will throw them away in month or two and buy all wilsons...

I think I have about 25 older military mags that all work to perfection with anything I put in them. but of course they only hold 7. I have a Wilson that will shoot anything but doesn't always lock the slide back. If they don't work with everything..they are gone..usually put 'em on the table at gun shows and sell 'em cheap. I also put rubber bumpers on the bottom of Military mags and I don't know why..other than the fact I have a bunch of them. Jon..when ya go to the range only take two mags and a box or so of ammo. Load 'em there and you usually won't forget 'em...Like Adam or Gil, who will probably remember 1 dollar (or less) military mags at the surplus store, it wasn't a big deal to lose a mag for the 45. With 30 dollar mags now I'd be a bit upset

It depends what you prefer

I have a pile of G.I. magazines and they all work well. A gun shop was selling used Colt magazines and I grabbed what was available. I like Wilson magazines when I can get them at a decent price. So it depends. All the best...
