Winter CCW carry arms.

It was 7 degrees at sunup today. With the need for heavy Winter coats, a CCW person can carry just about anything under the parkas. I usually carry a M1911 in a strong side holster. As the mood suits, I carry a P-38, M65 S&W or the Luger. In the cooler days of Fall and early Spring, a sleeveless vest hides much iron.

Our state regs state CCW iron is to be concealed, and Winter is a very easy time to comply. How are other CCW folks doing this season?

..........O.k., just kidding. I usually carry my 1911 in .38 Super in the winter more than the summer, but I still like my Detective special in .38 Special +P in the winter as well as summer. Winter is about the only time I carry my CZ75; I don't think it shows during summer carry, but psycologically I have the idea that the bulk of that 17 round magazine is sticking out 2 feet off my hip.
One thing to remember: Even though this might be winter, there are many times when you will be taking off that heavy coat: in a restaurant, or while Christmas shopping in an overheated mall, for example. Keep that in mind when making your decisions, and a bulky sweatshirt doesn't hurt, either.

Good point about taking your coat off, Mr 16 Gauge.
Another issue is: you can conceal darn near anything under a winter coat, but can you get at it?

My old Colt LW Commander is easy to carry with my parka or longer jacket, problem comes when one has to remove their outer garmet. Try to plan out what am doing that day or trip outside. Sometimes go to the Para Carry 9, easier to conceal under a vest. If nothing else the little Ruger LCP slips in to ones pocket easly.

Another factor to consider: will the caliber/cartridge you are carrying adequate to penetrate heavy winter clothing.

It depends what you prefer

I usually slip a Smith & Wesson Model 60 with a 2 inch barrel in .38 Special into my back pocket. No one knows it there but me. I have a shoulder holster for a 1911A1 or a 4 inch Model 66. So it depends. All the best...

mr. 16gauge raises a good pt. not sure where i stand on my 9 or 38+p when it comes to maybe a fella in a big bomber jacket or even a heavy carhartt. i love winter carry. now instead of squeezing an IWB rig in a pair of thin shorts i can put the glock right on the hip. maybe i need to go buy a 45! any good excuse for a new peice works

Mr. 16 gauge,

Point well taken. I never remove my Winter coat in malls. I unzip, but leave the lower 5 or 6 inches zipped to hide my iron. Loaded right, a 9mm or 45 ACP will deal with heavy Winter coats on the bad guys. Access to the CCW piece needs to be thought out and practiced.

Still love the 2" snubby. In a winter coat its easy to put it in your right pocket. Take your coat off and carry it, no problem. Coat on, no problem.

One thing to remember if push comes to shove we are talking very close range and there are a lot of unprotected areas. If not an in the face situation your obligation is to backon out of there. A lot different from my LE days.

In winter, with the ability to wear a coat, I sometimes bring one of the 6 inch barrel N frame Smith's, or my Python.
