For thos who have put kits together....

...which would you say were the easier ones to start out with? I'd eventually like to make my own custom flintlock rifle, but would like to cut my teeth on something relatively simple (and inexpensive?) prior to setting out down that path. Some of the single shot pistol kits (Kentucky, ect) look as if they might be simple.....
Any suggestions?

Mr. 16 gqauge,

Many years ago I bought two .45 caliber Kentucky-type percussion rifle kits for $30 each as the store was closing out their kits. I learned much on kit #1 and donated it to a neighbor for a mantle-piece decoration.

Kit #2 turned out far better than #1 and I shot it for several years with great satisfaction. Kits are a real challenge and take lots of intense work per my experience. If I were to do it all over again, I would buy a functioning arm off the rack and spare myself the hassle. Remember, there are no warranties on kits. Buy a gun off the rack and enjoy a warranty if things are not right with the arm. Just my humble opinion.

A tremendous amount of pride can go into build your own kit. CVA and Lyman kits are usually the least expensive and a good place to begin. However,if you are successful in the completion of a kit,be prepared to spend mass quantities of time and money to build a custom flintlock.
