Savage 24F

Anyone else ever use this gun for fall turkeys? I do most of my turkey hunting in PA where rifles are legal for the fall season. I bought my 24F .223 over 12 GA about fifteen years ago. Prior to buying this gun it seemed like more times than not when I ran into fall turkeys I always had the wrong gun. They were either too far for my shotgun or moving too fast for my rifle. I shoot it using a Redfield 1-4x variable shotgun scope. Mine has the black parkerized finish which is the only thing I wish was different. By the time I bought mine it was no longer available in the camo finish. I guess that is just a personal preference thing since it hasn't been a hindrance. When I have seen one of these for sale recently the price has been higher than I paid for mine new. I have thought about having mine dipped in camo but don't want to do anything to hurt its value.

I use my 24 - .22LR over 20 ga. 3" - in the fall during both turkey and deer seasons when I am squirrel hunting. The two seasons usually coincide here in central Virginia. I usually carry both 3" mag. no. 3 buckshot (for deer) and #4 fine shot (for turkey) should either happen by. So far neither has, but I figure I am adequately equipped if they do.

I use a 4X scope on mine with the see-thru mounts so I can use the shotgun barrel without having to look through the scope. I know a lot of folks don't like the see-thrus (I am one for the most part) but, at least for me, it works perfectly for this type application.

In the fifteen or so years since I have owned mine I cannot remember a fall season that I didn't get a bird. I would say that it has been pretty evenly split between rifle and shotgun. I took a nice gobbler with the .223 barrel this past Thanksgiving day. I have learned the hard way not to use hollow point ammo on turkeys. I now use only Remington 55 gr pointed soft points. For the 12 Ga barrel I have had my best success using 3 in Winchester High Velocity 2 oz number 5 shot turkey loads.

If anyone has one of these for sale in the camo version I would be interested.
