CMP M1 Garand

I was visiting a new gun shop today and spending time looking over the used gun racks. I spotted two M1 Garands and asked to look at them. The first M1 was in NRA fair condition and showed hard use or abuse and did not interest me. The second M1 was in mint condition in and out with a lovely walnut stock with all the cartouches intact. The hang tag said a manual went with the rifle. The manual was the G.I training handbook for the M1 Garand that the CMP sent with the rifle. This is a CMP collector grade rifle.

The gun shop gives customers 15 percent discounts on used guns if you have a coupon. I did not have one, so the clerk got one for me. We did the paperwork and the rifle came home with me. The rifle is in the five million serial number range and Old Guns website at www.oldguns.net says the rifler was made in 1955. What a find and what a bargain price! All the best...

Gil,

I got my 5 million Garand two years ago for an SKS and M48A swap. How much did you pay for the circa 1955 Garand? You always ask me what I pay for stuff, so here goes your turn.

CMP M1 Garand

Prices for a decent M1 Garand vary widely. I have seen rifles in poor condition with hang tag prices of one thousand dollars. This one started out at over eight hundred less a discount and then some other considerations came into play. The final cost to me was just over four hundred. All the best...

Gil,

VERY WELL DONE! A $400 Garand in "mint" condition in 2011 is about as rare as a Bigfoot sighting. What was the hang tag price on the "NRA Fair condition Garand?" If it was $150-$175, I will drive down and get it for a parts gun.

Both Garands in my post had the same hang tag price. I picked the best one. All the best...

Gil,

Thanks for the update. Since "both an NRA Fair and NRA Mint Garand" were priced the same by the gunshop, I suspect the proprietor has a VERTICLE learning curve. Whatever.

We NEED to hear from Joe Boleo to get to the facts, eh, wot?

CMP M1 Garand

Adam,
You need to get out more. Most of us have not seen a $150.00 - $175.00 Garand in over a generation. I have often seen surplus military arms priced the same even though the condition might vary. I suspect Gil does not have to prove anything. Maybe next time you should go shopping with him. Take care...
Joe
