Big Vanes v Little Vanes

The craze today seem to be Blaser or some variation of it. Anybody know if its real or not. My hunting partner is anal about the short vanes. Sez its stabilizes the arror better. I shoot 4" vanes and usually out shoot him. I do not know whether its worth changing or not.

Feathers for me.

buckhunter,

I personally use 4" parabolic feathers on my aluminum shafts and they shoot quite straight.

If your using 4" vanes and their working for you quit worrying about it. If the 2" blazers are working for your friend let him use them and you use what works for you. Just because he repeats all the hype in the magazines and whats on the internet dose not mean it is working.

You said that you usually out shoot him. That should be enough to keep you shooting what works for you and let him shoot what he thinks works for him.

Its like shooting firearms 2 people are shooting .308's but their using two different loads, primers and bullets to get the same job done.

Use what works for you. If you think that those ity bity blazers will work for you try them. I think you will keep using the 4" long after the 2" are used up.

They are doing fine so I will probably stay with em. Its like when fiber optic sites came out I was shooting OK with the old metal ones, then I tried them and now own one. Same with a kisser button. Always shot fingers until I tried a realese. Now shoot with one. Never worried about Let off until I tried a bow with 65% let off. My Matthews has 80%. I cannot see how small vanes would help the flight of a arrow.

If you're shooting the same diameter shafts, then less vane surface area translates to less impact on that particular shaft.

If you're using small OD shafts, then blazers will be more than sufficient. I've been shoting them on carbon arrows for years with no problems at significant distances. Also, you can put more helical on the vanes, and they should stabilize the shaft.

Will it improve anything??? Not very likely. If you've got something that works, stick with it.

i have always shot 4 inch vanes, however with muzzys (my broadhead of choice) this year i switched after noticing every one i hunt with and on tv has switched. was on the range the other day and every arrow i have, shoots with every broadhead i have, i used to have a few that were right on a few that were so-so some that were awful. now i know if you spin every broadhead tune every broad head to every arrow, and so on you can get it right. im just telling you i took the broadheads off because at 40 yds i was cutting blazers off other arrows. my set up isnt fancy, hoyt magnatec at 64lbs beman ics 400's, muzzy 100s and blazers. now i did notice that the high profile makes clearance a little close, and the fella who fletched for me has a decent amount of helical on them. for me it was well worth the change. but yes if its not broke dont fix it

I agree with what everyone has already stated....if it's working for you, there's no use in switching.

The reason they are effective is because of the high profile and steep front angle on the vane itself. They provide as much guidance as a 4" vane. If your bow is properly tuned and shooting the 4" vanes well, it makes more sense to stick with them as most short / hi-profile hunting vanes are quite a bit more expensive than traditional 4" vanes. They are stiffer than traditional vanes as well and fletching clearance on non-drop away rests can become an issue when a good bit of helical is added.

Personally, I switched a few years ago for no other reason than I liked the look of them!

I think I'm gonna stay with them. Had pretty good results this weekend plus I have a lot of them fletched up. I have too many projects going to start messing around with a different set up for bow season.

Plus looking a the drop away rest it might be a problem.

Thanks to all I did learn something.
