Hornady Ultrasonic Case Cleaner?
I was looking through the latest MidwayUSA sale catalog the other day and noticed that Hornady has come out with an ultrasonic case cleaner that apparently employs a liquid cleaning solution of some sort. The price of the device and the cleaning solution appears to be competitive with that for conventional tumbler-type cleaners and the dry, granulated cleaning media that they use. Does anyone know anything about this type of case cleaning device and, if so, would it be effective?

dovehunter, I am currently using a ultrasonic cleaner that is a deadringer for the Hornady machine. I am using their solution as a test on dirty cases. It did fantastic job. They don't shine as much as those out of a tumbler using Lyman walnut hulls with rouge but they are much cleaner inside. I am using the ultrasonic machine to cleaning the trigger groups on a batch of Remington shotguns for an industrial user. It works very well. There are two different solutions; one for cases and the other for guns parts.

Kendal makes the cleaners for Lyman's and Hornady as well as others. I've had mine for over a year and they work great. You can save almost 1/2 the price by buying from Kendal, link is below and the one I use is the Kendal Pro 160 watt w/heater for $79.95.

I have a real good friend that just got one. He likes it. He plans to clean his cases in it and then polish them in his tumbler. He said the biggest problem is getting the inside of the cases dry. I watched it work the other day and don`t think I`m going to run out and buy one.

Anytime a liquid is involved in a project, it is necessary to include drying time by whatever method chosen. I don't wait until the last minute to clean cases because even if they are wet tumbled, drying time must be considered. I will have to compare wet tunbling with media vs ultra sound treating with a ccleaning solution to see which gets the cases the cleanest, inside and out. If you don't like the system or the results you are correct in not purchasing a unit.

I probably don't get the same results to the degree of the ultrasonic cleaner but it works pretty well. I use an old 1 Gal. plastic wide mouth jar put about two qts. of hot tap water and add two tablespoons of Lemishine and mix well, add cruddy brass make sure it's cover with the mix and let soak for an hour with a couple of shakes in between.
I then rinse well with clean water shake brass dry in an old pillow case and throw it in my tumble for about an hour or so that's loaded with cob media and cap full of NuFinish. It's not to high tech and I don't have to clean brass to that extent that often so it a cheap solution. You guys might want to try the Lemishine in you ultrasonics,it especially works great if your brass is tarnished. The tarnish will turn a light shade of pink but goes away when tumbled. Before/old Mil-Surplus brass After |
