Used Military arms!!!

I was at my local gunshop this morning when "Bubba" parked his truck out front and came into the shop. He asked, "Can I sell you some used hunting guns?" The shop owner said, "Bring them in so I can evaluate them." It was raining steadily at the time. Bubba opened the passenger door and brought in 8 long guns, four each trip. None were in cases, all got wet and it did not hurt the condition of any arm. I saw a British Enfield, two SKSs, and other junk that all had an orange-patina of rust from muzzle to breech!

I went outside to chat with a friend on the sidewalk. About 3 minutes later I saw Bubba exit the store with 4 long guns and the shop owner was right behind with four more "Boat Anchors!" Oil is cheap and gun cases can be homemade from old pant legs in the family rag bag. I am sickened to see how badly some folks treat fine guns. What can anyone say about such things?

I agree

More guns are ruined by neglect than are ever worn out. The gun shops that I visit do not accept junk gun in trades. Take care...

Joe,

You would have been shocked, as I was, if you had seen the condition of the guns. I never saw anything as rusty as those arms. All were beyond economic repair IMHO.

I dunno about beyond economic repair. Old military firearms, even ones in very bad condition, can be repaired with 3-in-1 household oil, 4/0 steel wool, and new springs for the cost of a little elbow grease. Me I woulda offered him some stupid lowball price for the lot, you never know.

GOB,

Yes, you probably could have restored those arms to some better condition-if you live long enough. The exterior of the barrels were rusted worse than the old crow bar I keep in the barn. The tailpipe of my 2004 truck had LESS rust, in and out, that those guns.

I did not make an offer to the gun owner in, or in front of, the owner's gunshop. That is poor form in this area. Besides, the shop owner is my neighbor and good friend.

Well I do respect your opinion on such matters Adam, so I will take your word for it.

As for making an offer in front of the shop, once the owner has said no (not offered a low amount but said no) then I see no reason not to offer him some pocket change for them. Now by all means it is bad form to try to undercut the shop even here, but if they aren't interested others are.

GOB,

I think you are correct. I just did not have a need for another month of work on rusty guns when there is field work to do and firewood to cut.

Ah come on Adam, you didn't have to bring up firewood and field work.... I am trying to pretend I don't have my own piles of work to do every weekend... Heck I have started coming to work so I can rest up from the weekends
