Careful in Woods

As vacation time is here, I want to warn of booby traps on NF trails. They have recovered spike type traps in the Pike NF. Puncher a bike tire and lower
extremities unless you watch for them. The flakes are out early this year!

I will bet you a dollar to a dog biscuit there is an illegal pot grow somewhere near that trail. A few years back we had seen that kinda thing on public land in our area and they found a bunch of illegals squatting on public land growing ditch weed.

Just be careful on public land PERIOD these days folks.

Sounds stupid..but I always keep an eye out. not much pot growing around here..but ya never know what or who you will come up on out there. I am always armed when out on the prairie or in the mountains.

BTW..had a young guy from Texas call me today..he lives here now for at least a couple years. He said he thinks he needs a gun for protection in the mountains. He is horn hunting and has run up on 3 grizz in the last week..close range grizz. He wanted a 38/357. I asked him if first..he had a death wish horn hunting unarmed..and a second death wish for wanting a 38/357. He asked if he should get a 44 mag..and I said that was somewhat better..but what he really needed was an 8 or 9 shot short bbld shotgun with slugs..NO buckshot. Personally..I'd rather have a 15 shooter shotgun loaded that way. He said he was within 20 yds of one. He turned and walked away from the grizzly. Usually a bad thing to do..

Dan,

That California Game Warden show, Wild Justice, (I believe) often has booby traps and armed pot growers in their programs on TV. An article in our newspaper last year discussed your very subject regarding the 1.5 million acres of State Game Lands in PA. Bottom Line: Be vigilant and watch it.

One Pot Grow had a concealed bear trap on a path into the patch. Another trap is suspended fish hooks hung from fine fishing line from tree branches.

Lot of weed grown in NF. I assure you I am both armed and keep a good eye out!

Unhappy

Sure is different than it was in years past. I never hit the trail, or stop to camp, without a handgun now.

Thanks for the info. We live and work on the North Country Trail section that starts at the Ohio/Pa line to Moraine State Park and so far have not found anything like that but have found buckets back in the woods that I suspect had something growing at one time. Will watch out for such a thing.
