Altering length of hull

I was wondering if a person could alter the length of the hull to make 2 3/4" shells. IE 3" or 3 1/2" cut down to 2 3/4" length. Reason is, is that I've found lots of 3" and 3 1/2" high brass, but no 2 3/4" hulls to use and would rather build slug loads out of 2 3/4" than longer. Is it possible? Or better yet, safe to do?

To my knowledge it is all the same plastic. There shouldn't be any reason why you couldn't trim off quarter-inch and run it through your press. I've never personally done it but I'll bet some folks like skeet has.

No reason you can't. In Thee Olden Days when men were men and shotshell hulls were paper, shortening a hull when the mouth got too frayed was not uncommon.

Ok, cool, I can get black cloud 3" and 3 1/2" for around $18/100.

Drew you can surely cut off longer cases to make what ever you want. I used to do it for a 2 1/2 in Brit Double I had..Pretty gun but a pain to load for. There are some companies that sell cut off tools just for the job. But to make a decent looking a loading shell you will probably have to skive the end of the case. They sell tools for that too. Skivving makes the end of the case thinner allowing it to close correctly with most modern loading tools. If you want to load slugs you may want to roll crimp cases like they do the older Foster style slugs. Another thing..I don't know what kind of slugs you intend to load...but it is truly hard to get traditional slugs like the Foster to shoot anywhere as well as factory. I still have one 12 ga slug mold left in my casting tools. I don't know why. Heck I even loaded my own 410 slugs..What a job. best slug type load I could get was a 16 ga punkin ball load. Sold that mold about 2 months ago. I tried most everything in shotshell loading.
